LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Freshman Brandi Henton's game-high 30 points wasn't enough as the Long Beach State women's basketball team dropped an 82-60 decision to USC Sunday afternoon at the Galen Center.
The Trojans (2-1) shot 42.9 percent from the field and made 41.4 percent of their shots from beyond the arc, while the 49ers posted a 37.3 field goal percentage. USC outrebounded LBSU, 46-34.
Henton, who registered a double-double against Oregon two days ago, poured in a career-best 30 points. It was the first time a 49er has scored 30 points in a game since 2008.
Henton also had a team-best seven rebounds, while junior Tipesa Moorer chipped in eight points. Senior Ashley Bookman and freshman Janae Coffee also finished with five rebounds apiece.
USC raced out to an 8-0 lead after a jumper by Christina Marinacci at the 15:50 mark. Moorer eventually got The Beach on the board just over two minutes later, nailing a 3-pointer from the corner. That sparked a 9-0 run by LBSU, bringing the 49ers within one at the second media timeout with 11 minutes remaining. The Women of Troy pulled ahead following the short break, scoring six unanswered points to go up, 16-9.
The Trojans stayed out front for the remainder of the half, taking a 16-point advantage (36-20) at intermission.
USC came out of the break on fire as its first seven field goals of the half were 3-pointers and the Women of Troy took their largest lead of the game at 75-43 with 6:50 on the clock.
Henton single-handedly cut the deficit to 77-55, scoring 14 points over a six-minute span. Henton and the 49ers were unable to dig themselves out of the hole, however, as USC ran away with the 82-60 victory.
Cassie Harberts led the Trojans with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Jacki Gemelos also finished with 14 points.
Long Beach State (0-4) returns to action next weekend when it heads to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown (Nov. 26-28). The 49ers open the eight-team tournament against Illinois Friday at 4:30 p.m. (PST).
