Fullerton, Calif. - In a busy day at the Fullerton Invitational, the only matches Long Beach State dropped came to their fellow 49er hitting partners, as Beach tennis continued to dominate the draw. Long Beach State is now the only team left in the tournament, as all four doubles teams advanced to the semifinals, and the 49ers sent four singles players to the semis as well.
Long Beach State completed a second-straight undefeated day in doubles, and was perfect in singles until the draw prevented it, as the 49ers placed seven of the eight players in the quarterfinals.
Klaudia Malenovska dropped only four games on the day in singles, defeating Portland State's Yuki Sugiyama 6-1, 6-2 before the first of LBSU's one-on-one matches, defeating Sarah Cantlay 6-0, 6-1. Cantlay reached the quarters after beating Cal State Northridge's Nina Jaworowski in the day's wildest match, falling 6-7 in the first before outlasting Jaworowski 7-6, 6-3 in the next two sets.
In another all-49er bracket, Anna Jeczmionka defeated Cal State Fullerton's Malorie de la Cruz 6-1, 6-0, and Jaklin Alawi beat Ashley Anderson of LMU 7-5, 6-2 to set up a match that Alawi took 6-0, 6-3. Julie Luzar had a strong day, beating Fullerton's Tiffany Mai before topping teammate Debroah Armstrong 6-2, 6-4 after Armstrong advanced via a walkover.
Long Beach State's lone solo quarterfinal went to Anais Dallara, who beat Nadia Sakhakorn 6-3, 6-0, before bouncing the last non-49er out of the tournament, beating Fullerton's Morgan McIntosh 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, Long Beach State's tandems cruised to victories to set-up meetings between all eight of the 49ers. Cantlay/Luzar had the tightest match of the day, beating LMU's Anderson/Valenzuela 8-5, while Alawi/Jeczmionka were the only duo to play just one match, getting a walkover against Jaworowski/Yang of CS Northridge to reach the semis.
The 49ers will play the remaining matches in the tournament tomorrow at Fullerton, with the possible exception of moving the doubles final to LBSU on Monday.
