Beach splits on first day of USC Fall Tournament

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Long Beach State men's volleyball team dropped a 2-1 decision to UCLA before defeating UC Santa Barbara, 2-0, on the first day of the USC Fall Tournament Friday afternoon at the Galen Center Pavilion.
All matches were the best of three sets with the first two sets played to 25 points and the third to 15 points. For matches that were decided in two sets, teams had the option of playing a non-counting third game.
The Beach began the tournament by taking game one against UCLA, 26-24, but came up short in the next two sets by scores of 25-21 and 15-13. LBSU then swept UC Santa Barbara, 25-22, 25-21. The two teams opted to play a third game in which the Gauchos won, 15-10.
Brad Hemmerling was the 49ers' high scorer of the day with 13 points on 10 kills, while Kyle Friend finished with 10 points (nine kills). Antwain Aguillard led the team in blocking with four stuff blocks and five controls. Colten Echave and Hemmerling also chipped in three aces apiece.
Long Beach State continues the two-day tournament with three matches on Saturday. The 49ers will take on Pacific (9 a.m.), USC (10:45 a.m.) and Cal State Northridge (2:15 p.m.).
