Beach Tennis begins final tournament of the fall

San Diego, Calif. - Beach Tennis started play in their final fall tournament of 2010, traveling south to the ITA Western Regional hosted by San Diego State. Klaudia Malenovska remained in the main draw on both sides, winning twice to reach the Round of 32 in singles and winning a match with Rachel Manasse to advance in doubles.
Long Beach State had exactly half of their entrants make it through to the second day, as two doubles pairs and four singles players out of the eight entered won out over the day. Malenovska had the busiest day, winning two economical matches 6-0, 6-2, and 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the Round of 32 in singles. In doubles, she was equally dominant, as Malenovska/Manasse topped Hawaii's Ploch/Zorec 8-1.
Among other singles winners, #100 Jaklin Alawi was seeded 16th in the main draw, and after a first-round bye the sophomore defeated Arizona's Elizabeth Hammond 6-0, 6-3. Anna Jeczmionka also had a bye before a win, beating Kristina Smith of UC Irvine 6-2, 7-5. Julie Luzar rounded out the singles winners, beating Arizona's Debora Castany 6-4, 6-1.
Deborah Armstrong lost a tough opening round match to USD's Laura Claus in three sets, while Rachel Manasse, after a first-round win over San Diego's Cara Brown, lost to #66 Arianna Colffer in the Round of 64.
In doubles, USC's Kinstler/Lao of USC defeated Alawi/Jeczmionka 8-1, and while Cantlay/Luzar received a first-round bye, they fell to the second-seeded pair of #24 Bhargava/Zalameda of Pepperdine 8-3. The 49ers had one other team advance along with Malenovska/Manasse however, as Armstrong/Dallara defeated James/Simmons of Arizona State by an 8-3 margin.
Main draw play continues tomorrow, and a back draw for the eliminated players will also start on Friday.
