Dirtbags Win Sixth Straight

Long Beach, Calif. - LONG BEACH, Calif. - Adam Wilk pitched 7.1 strong innings and closer Charlie Ruiz shut the door as the Dirtbags defeated UC Riverside 5-2 on Friday. Ruiz converted his fifth save of the season as Long Beach State extended its winning streak to six games.
Wilk picked up his third straight win, throwing 98 pitches over seven and a third with four strikeouts, allowing two runs on seven hits. UC Riverside starter Paul Bargas matched Wilk's 7.1 innings, but gave up five runs and took the loss.
Long Beach State got on the board first in the second inning. Derek Legg started the frame with a double to left-center field, and the Dirtbags pushed him around to score with a sacrifice and a groundout to get the win.
The top of the Highlander lineup got things going for UCR in the third. After making two outs, the top three batters all singled to bring in two runs. The Dirtbags then evened the score in the bottom half when an RBI triple by TJ Mittelstaedt scored Jordan Casas.
Long Beach State finally moved out in front for good in the seventh inning. Taylor Krick started the rally with a one-out walk, and after a sacrifice, Jonathan Jones and Casas both singled to give the Dirtbags a 4-2 lead.
Wilk, working into the eighth, started the inning with a walk as UC Riverside forced the junior left-hander into a jam. A single by Joey Gonzalez put two runners on, but a bunt from Michael Hur was popped foul to a diving Kellen Hoime behind the plate. Another single loaded the bases, but the Dirtbags turned to closer Ruiz, who collected two infield outs in the eighth and then retired the side in order in the ninth with two strikeouts.
The Dirtbags return to Blair Field Saturday for game two of the three-game series with the Highlanders. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
