Dirtbags complete comeback win over Pepperdine

Malibu, Calif. - Trailing 4-1 after a pair of Pepperdine home runs, Long Beach State rallied to a 5-4 win Monday afternoon. Kellen Hoime and Jordan Casas each contributed a pair of hits to lead the offense.
Pepperdine got on the board first in the second inning on a two-run home run by David Harris, who had a big day with three hits total for the Waves. Long Beach State drew one run back in fourth inning after a leadoff single by Casas, scoring on a Hoime RBI, but the Waves answered with a run in the bottom half to keep a 3-1 lead.
A solo home run by Ryan Heroy in the fifth inning gave Pepperdine its largest lead, a 4-1 advantage which would last until the seventh.
Waves starter Scott Alexander, who had limited to the Dirtbags to just the pair of fourth inning hits over six inning with six strikeouts, turned the ball over to Bryce Uhrig in the seventh, and Long Beach State immediately took advantage. The Dirtbags pounded out five singles in the inning, the first four coming in a row off of Uhrig, including a two-run single down the line by Derek Legg. A Casas single finally scored Taylor Krick, putting Long Beach State ahead for the first time.
In all, the Dirtbags scored four unanswered runs to take the lead on five hits in the seventh.
David Born and Charlie Ruiz combined for 2.2 innings of hitless relief over the remainder of the game, as Ruiz pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to collect his seventh save of the season. David Brown was the winner for Long Beach State, throwing a team-high 2.1 innings.
Long Beach State returns home to Blair Field this weekend for a conference series against Cal State Northridge. Game one is set for Friday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
