LAKEWOOD, Calif. - The Long Beach State softball team (13-9) was held to just three hits in a 3-0 loss to Iowa Saturday morning at Mayfair Park.
The Beach struggled with runners in scoring position for the second straight game as it stranded eight against the Hawkeyes. Junior Brandy Reyes reached base in all three of her at bats with a single and two walks. Seniors Jennifer Griffin and Jonae Perez rounded out the 49ers in the hit column.
Freshman Taylor Petty (6-1) suffered her first loss of the season, giving up three runs on nine hits while striking out six. Amanda Zust earned the win for Iowa, scattering three hits, while Brittany Weil came in to shut The Beach down for the save.
LBSU left the bases full in both the second and third innings. The 49ers also threatened in the sixth when Reyes and Perez drew back-to-back walks with one out. Zeil, who had entered the game with a 2-0 count against Perez, settled down to retire Ashley Levine and Jodi Nakawatase to keep the shutout alive.
Iowa (14-4) got on the board in the top of the fourth when Katie Brown led off with a single to left field. After getting the next batter to pop up, Petty gave up a base hit to Chelsey Carmody and both runners eventually came around to score on a two-out pinch-hit single off the bat of Katie Keim.
The Hawkeyes tacked on one more run in the final inning on an RBI single from Erin Riemersma.
The 49ers continue action at the Long Beach Invitational with two games on Sunday (March 8). LBSU begins the final day of the tournament by taking on No. 3 UCLA at 1:30 p.m., before battling Syracuse at 3:45 p.m. (PT).
