Nov. 30, 1994
Long Beach, Calif. - None of it could have happened without the first night. Not the NCAA Volleyball tournaments and championships, not sell-out basketball games, the boxing bouts, the Stingrays, the Summer Pro League games--none of it could have happened without November 30, 1994, the night the Pyramid opened.
The 49ers men's basketball team played host to Detroit in a game televised nationally on ESPN. The Pyramid is 18 stories tall, and it was bursting at the rafters that night, with roaring noise from a raucous sell-out crowd of 5,021. Of course, the 49ers won, 71-64, kicking off a great season for the team as they went 11-2 in the Pyramid that year, while averaging over 4,000 fans in attendance.
It's rumored that the Pyramid actually hosted a game before opening night, when the women's volleyball team had a quick get-together.
In the fifteen years since opening, the Pyramid has been the site of tons of memorable moments for Long Beach State athletics. Don't believe it? Check out the rest of this list!
