FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Long Beach State women's track and field team opened the 2009 indoor season with six athletes competing in two events on the first day of the Mountain T's Invitational Friday afternoon at Northern Arizona's LJ Walkup Skydome.
Freshman Destanie Yarbrough took home a first-place finish in the weight throw open in her collegiate debut. The Fresno, Calif., native recorded a mark of 45-06.25 to finish ahead of the pack.
Senior Katie Black was the 49ers' top finisher in the long jump open as she placed sixth with a personal indoor best of 17-07.00. Junior Tayler O'Connor was not far behind at 17-01.25, which was good enough for eighth place. Senior Tiana Johnson had an 11th-place showing with a leap of 16-08.00, while freshmen Rebecca Hamilton (15-11.50) and Stephanie Glick (15-10.25) rounded out the group at No. 18 and 19, respectively.
The 49er men will kick off the season tomorrow beginning with the 400-meter open at 9:30 a.m. The women will also be back in action as they open the second day with the 800m open at 10:15 a.m. The track and field events will run all day.
SEATTLE, Wash. - The Long Beach State track and field team concluded action on the first day of the Washington Invitational Friday evening at Dempsey Indoor Facility.
Senior Kristina Wilson kicked off the first session with a 13th-place finish in the 5000-meter run as she recorded a personal indoor best time of 17:34.33.
The women's distance medley relay squad of Carly Harris, Ejiro Okoro, Missy Barclay and Sarah Apgar then clocked in with the second-best indoor mark in school history at 12:09.59. The men's quartet of Matt Maldonado, Brent Gray, Alex Freitas and Raul Arcos also had a strong showing, finishing the race in 10:03.68 to rank second on the 49er all-time top 10 list.
Long Beach State will return to the track tomorrow beginning with the men's 60m dash at 9:50 a.m.
