Fort Collins, Colo. - Long Beach State freshman standout Lee Lopez shot a 4-under 68 in the final round of the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic to finish tied for third place and led the 49ers to a sixth place finish at the Ptarmigan Country Golf Club.
Playing in her first collegiate tournament, Lopez finished just two strokes behind Shannon Yocum of California as she captured the individual title with an eight-under 208. Lopez moved up eight spots in the standings from 11th place after shooting a 68 and a 74 on the first day as she recorded a three-round total of six-under 210. Lopez posted five birdies and had only one bogey that was on the third hole.
Senior All-American Kay Hoey playing in her first tournament since the 2006 season, fell from seventh place to 11th as she carded a two-over 74 in the final round, which included five bogey's and three birdies to post a three-round total of a two-under 214. This was Hoey's fourth time playing in the Colorado State tournament as she won the individual championship in 2006. In 2005, she finished in eighth and tied for third in 2004.
Sophomore Reina Rogers posted a three-over 75 in the final round for a tournament total of a 10-over 226 as she tied with five other players for 47th. Junior Brenda Chhuor tied for 66th with an eight-over 80 to finish with a score of 232, while sophomore Lindsey McAtee tied for 75th.
California won the team title by six stokes over second place Colorado as the Golden Bears recorded an 18-under 846 score
"We played pretty well this weekend, so I'm not disappointed at all especially compared to last year's results," said 49er Head Coach Sue Ewart. "Obviously, Lee played great in her first college tournament as did Kay, although she was disappointed with her performance in the final round. Reina was consistent and Brenda and Lindsey were disappointed with themselves. We've made huge strides and we know what we have to work on for our next tournament. It's a great start for the team!"
The 49ers are next in action as they travel back to the state of Colorado for the Heather Farr Memorial Tournament hosted by the University of Colorado. The two-day tournament begins on Sept. 29-30, at the Omni Interlocken Golf Club in Boulder.
