TEMPE, AZ-- Arizona State's Karin Volpe took a pass from Jill Shoquist and after getting past a defender fired it to the right of goalkeeper Liz Ramos for the only score of the contest, as ASU (6-2-3) got past visiting Long Beach State (6-3-2) 1-0 on a near triple-digit Sunday.
It was the 49ers third 1-0 loss of the season in an evenly played contest that saw LBSU take nine shots, and the Sun Devils take eight. The ASU defense made five saves, with goalkeeper Briana Silvestri making three saves and her defenders stopping the other two.
It was ASU's second 1-0 victory of the weekend against the Big West, as the Sun Devils defeated UC Santa Barbara 1-0 on Friday night.
The 49ers are next in action when they begin conference play starting on Friday, hosting UC Davis at George Allen Field. LBSU was picked to finished second in the Big West by a single point to the Gauchos.
