Long Beach, Calif. - Freshman pitcher Brooke Turner was picked for the 2008 All-America Team as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association today. Nominees were culled from first-team all-region nominees around the nation.
Turner compiled an outstanding first year with the Beach. The Big West Pitcher of the Year, Turner finished the year with a 27-6 record and an 0.80 ERA, leading the 49ers to their 18th postseason appearance.
"I'm very happy for Brooke and for the program." said LBSU head coach Kim Sowder. "She definitely deserves the honor; she had a great season. Her hard work alongside pitching coach Stephanie Swenson really paid off. She was a big part of our success this year, and I look forward to the next three years with her."
In just her first year at the Beach, Turner stepped in and rewrote a number of records. In her collegiate debut, she set the school record for strikeouts with 15, and would later strike out 16 batters against Florida, handing the Gators one of two regular-season losses. Her eight Big West Pitcher of the Week awards were a conference record, and her 237 strikeouts, 17 shutouts and 27 wins were all Long Beach State single-season records.
"It's really exciting to be named an All-American," said Turner. "Coming in as a freshman, I certainly didn't expect any huge awards like this. Winning something so prestigious is a huge honor."
Turner becomes just the fourth All-American in school history, joining Sowder, Mary Letourneau and Linda Lunceford as All-Americans. Additionally, her second-team status puts her beside Letourneau as the highest All-America nod for any softball player at the Beach.
