IRVINE--Long Beach State sophomore Brett Lorin (Laguna Niguel) was named the Big West's Pitcher for his heroics last Saturday, when he was pushed into the starting rotation at Cal Poly and responded with seven innings of five-hit ball, as he gave up just one unearned run.
Lorin, who had pitched 32.0 total innings this season, mostly as the team's weekday starter instead set a career-best in innings pitched with seven, retiring seven and then another eight in a row on 79 pitches. Lorin's previous bests were 5.0 innings starts against Harvard (an eventual one-hit combined shutout) and Pepperdine (a seven-hit combined shutout).
Lorin improved to 4-3 with a 2.54 ERA on the season.
The entire rotation past National Pitcher of the Year candidate Andrew Liebel (8-2, 1.74) has not been set in the annual showdown with CS Fullerton at Blair Field beginning on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Saturday's contest will be at 6:30 p.m. as well, while senior day will be Sunday at 1 p.m.
