Lorin Wins Series for Dirtbags

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA-- Brett Lorin (4-3) gave up one unearned run over seven strong innings in his first career weekend start as Long Beach State (33-18, 13-7 Big West) won the series at Cal Poly (23-29, 7-13 Big West) following a 6-2 win on Saturday evening.
Jordan Casas, making just his third start of the season and second of the series, playing for an injured Jason Corder, drove in two runs and went 3-for-4 with three singles and a sacrifice fly. Steve Tinoco added three hits and two RBIs.
Lorin retired seven in a row early and then another eight in a row into the seventh, scattering five hits and giving up an unearned run over seven career innings. He struck out two and walked one on 79 pitches, rolling eight groundouts and getting 10 fly outs. Lorin had previously started six times, all on the weekdays, going five innings twice.
Long Beach State scored single runs in three of the first four innings to lead 3-1, before scoring three unearned runs in the sixth to lead 6-1, taking advantage of Cal Poly's third error of the contest.
With the win, LBSU takes over sole possession of second place following UC Riverside's loss today to UC Santa Barbara. LBSU is 1.5 games behind idle CS Fullerton in the standings.
A Casas RBI single in the sixth made it 4-1, as Jared Eskew (5-3) went the first 5.2 innings, giving up six runs (two earned) on eight hits, leaving with the bases loaded. Tinoco followed with a two-run single off of reliever Brian Grening, as shortstop Wes Morel's error with two outs opened the flood gates and began the rally for LBSU.
A Casa sacrifice fly made it 2-0 in the second, before a wild pitch by Eskew in the fourth made it 4-1.
The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. to close out the final road trip of the regular season. LBSU hosts Oregon State at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
