SAN DIEGO - Tenth-seeded Long Beach State (16-17) used a three-goal fourth quarter to claim an 8-6 victory over No. 12 seed UC Santa Barbara (6-21) in the 11th-place game of the MPSF Championships on Sunday morning. Lauren Sieprath and Cecilia Canetti scored three goals a piece for the 49ers, who dropped the first two games of the tournament prior to Sunday's win.
Kristen Stragier had nine saves in the win, giving her 286 for the season, a new single-season record, a record she passed earlier this year (244). Senior Dayna Wawrzynski closed out her career with one goal and five for the tournament, giving her 68, the second-best average for a single season. Wawrzynski finished her four-year career with 91 goals.
The 16 wins doubled the win total from last year (8-19) for second-year Head Coach Catharine von Schwarz.
UCSB jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second period, but LBSU then stormed back with three goals to close out the half with a narrow 3-2 advantage. The 49ers opened the scoring in the third period to take a two-goal advantage before the Gauchos responded with three unanswered to reclaim the lead at 5-4. The Beach then scored with 2:41 left in the quarter to knot the score once again, at 5-5.
The two teams went back and forth in the final stanza until LBSU took the lead for good at the 2:27 mark. The 49ers added an insurance goal with 53 seconds remaining to secure the win and an 11th-place finish.
