Long Beach, Calif. - Junior third baseman Jennifer Griffin has been named the Big West Co-Player of the Week for the week ending April 21 as announced by the conference office today. Griffin was chosen along with Cal State Northridge's Amanda Peek as to share the award for her play this weekend.
Griffin continued to hit at an outstanding rate over the weekend, batting .727 (8-for-11) to help the 49ers take control of first place in the Big West, winning a series on the road against UC Santa Barbara.
Against the Gauchos, Griffin smacked two home runs along with a double, slugging 1.364 over the three game series to help the 49ers win the first two games. Driving in a team-high five runs, Griffin was 3-for-4 in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, and hit 2-for-3 Sunday in the series finale.
Griffin also earned her seventh intentional walk of the season, giving her 29 total walks on the year, two short of the single-season Long Beach State record. She also improved her batting average in conference play to .484, the highest in the league.
This is the second Big West Player of the Week award for Griffin this season, and the second for Long Beach State as a whole. Griffin previously won the award for her work during the Hawai'i Paradise Classic.
