FIRST TEE: Long Beach State travels up to Eugene, Oregon as the 49ers will be among 14 teams competing in the Oregon Duck Invitational. First and second round action begins on Monday, Mar. 24, with a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m. and the final 18-holes concluding on Tuesday, Mar. 25 at the Eugene Country Club. Other teams competing in this year's tournament are California, UC Davis, Colorado, Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon, Oregon State, Portland State, Texas-San Antonio, Washington, Washington State and Wyoming. San Francisco claimed last year's title as the Dons (919) finished three strokes ahead of Washington State (922). Amy Eneroth (222) of Washington State won the individual title on a 1-hole playoff with Jessica Potter (222) of USF.
LAST TIME IN EUGENE: The last time the 49ers played in the Oregon Duck Invitational was in 2005 as The Beach finished in fifth place as they shot a three-round total of 919 (309-302-308) at the Shadow Hills Country Club in Junction City, Ore. Kay Hoey won the individual title as she finished by one shot with a score 218 (75-70-73). Katy Barrett finished in 39th with a 238. In 2004, the 49ers made their first appearance in the Oregon Duck Invitational as LBSU tied for fourth place with a 959 and Bolee Kim was the top 49er as finished tied for fifth.
LAST WEEK IN LAS VEGAS: The 49ers finished in 18th place at the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational last week in Boulder City, Nev. The Beach shot a three-round total of 942 (321-309-312). Washington State and BYU both tied for first place with a 5-under 859. Individually for the 49ers, Lindsey McAtee led LBSU with an 11-over 227 as she finished tied for 53rd. Reina Rogers and Erin Cylke both tied for 75th and Las Vegas native Katy Barrett finished in 92nd.
McATEE LEADS THE BEACH IN SPRING SEASON: Freshman Lindsey McAtee (Poway) continues with her impressive performance this year as she was the top 49er for the fourth consecutive tournament. McAtee's season best came at the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational as she shot a two-round total of 150 to tie for 20th place, marking her first top-20 finish. McAtee's best low round was also in Fresno as she shot a 3-under 69 as she led the field after the opening round.
ROGERS CONTINUES TO IMPROVE HER GAME: Freshman Regina Rogers (Oxnard) continues to improve her swing and putting as she remains consistent in her five tournaments she's played in ... Rogers had her second best finish this year as she tied for 34th place at the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational ... she leads the team with an average of 77.64 ... "Reina onceagain impresses with her solid play from day to day. She is consistent, level headed and unflappable. The more experience she has the better she'll be.
BEACH SIGNS TWO FOR NEXT SEASON: Long Beach State Head Women's Golf Coach Sue Ewart announced over the winter break that Simone Hoey (Rancho Cucamonga) and Lee Lopez (Whittier) have signed National Letters-of-Intent with the 49ers ... Hoey, the sister of Kay Hoey, is the Summer Metro Player of the Year for the Southern California PGA Junior Tour ... Hoey represented Southern California at the Mary Cave Cup where she finished 7th ... She has also competed at the Junior World Championship in 2006 where she finished 27th ... Hoey is no stranger to the Southern California golf scene where she has competed extensively for the past several years. Her scoring average of 75.82 has included several wins this year ... Lopez, a senior at La Serna High School is currently ranked No. 9 in the Golfweek rankings and is a Rolex Junior All-America Honorable Mention ... She has dominated Southern California junior golf for the past few years and is the Toyota Tour Cup Player of the Year and JAGS Player of the Year for the past three years ... She has also won back-to-back titles at the Junior America's Cup while representing Southern California. This past year she competed in 10 AJGA events, finishing in the top five three times including one win ... Her scoring average with the AJGA is 74.13 while her scoring average on the Toyota Tour Cup is 73.62 ... Lee is also the newly crowned CIF State Champion, shooting two-under at Poppy Hills and winning by two shots ... She advanced to the CIF State by winning the Southern California region with a score of 69 at Diamond Bar.
NEXT UP FOR THE BEACH: The 49ers are next in action as they travel up to Northern California for the Peg Barnard Invitational hosted by Stanford University on Apr. 11-12.
