Peterson Drives Beach to Sweep

LONG BEACH-- Shane Peterson drove in five runs and No. 10-ranked Long Beach State (5-2) swept its season series with No. 7-ranked Wichita State (3-3) winning the Sunday finale, 8-3.
Jacob Thompson (1-1) pitched seven strong innings for The Beach, striking out eight and walking none. After giving up two runs on two hits in the first, he scattered five hits the rest of the way, using just 88 pitches on the afternoon.
Peterson finished his afternoon with a two-run double in the eighth inning to make it 8-2, after posting a bases loaded walk in the fourth and a two-run double in the first.
The Dirtbags scored three times in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. A bases loaded walk of Peterson by reliever Andy Womack broke the tie, before a two-run, pinch-hit single by Ted Lemasters made it 5-2. A Taylor Krick home run to centerfield then made it 6-2 off of Womack.
Tim Kelley (1-1) gave up five runs (four earned) on four hits over the first 3.2 innings to take the loss.
A two-run home run by Dusty Coleman gave Wichita State a brief 2-0 lead, before a Peterson, two-run double tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the first.
The Dirtbags close out the eight-game home stand on Tuesday with Loyola Marymount at 6:30 p.m. RHP Tyler Topp (0-0, 0.00) is slated to start for LBSU.
