San Diego, Calif. - Danielle Linke made two hits and scored twice to lead the 49ers in a 6-0 win over Iowa State in their opening game at San Diego State. Jessica Beaver added a two-run double and Whitney Radcliff also had two hits for the 49ers.
Brooke Turner again provided solid work for the 49ers in the circle, finishing her eighth complete-game shutout of the year, striking out six and walking one while allowing five hits. However, the story for the 49ers was the continued awakening of the LBSU offense.
Long Beach State pounded out nine hits on the way to six runs, providing Turner with plenty of cushion in the early innings. The biggest chunk came in the second inning. Jennifer Griffin started the frame with a leadoff double, and after being pushed over by Broke LeSage, came around to score on an RBI triple from Linke. Coming up in the same situation as Linke, Ashley Weber reached on an error, scoring Linke and putting the Beach up by two runs. Radcliff kept the inning going with a single, and a second error from the Cyclones pushed a third run across and kept the inning alive for Jessica Beaver, who doubled home both runners in front of her to put the 49ers on top 4-0.
Iowa State switched to Amie Ford in the circle, but Long Beach State added a pair of runs against her as well. Lacy Tyler singled to start the fourth inning, and after LeSage was plunked for a team-high fifth time, Linke singled to keep the rally going. Weber continued the station-to-station play with an RBI single, and Radcliff finished off the scoring with a third straight single bringing home Linke.
The Beach has one more game today in San Diego against New Mexico State. In all, the 49ers will play five games in the San Diego Classic, finishing up against two ranked opponents in No. 23 San Diego State and No. 5 Texas A&M.
