Long Beach, Calif. - Freshman pitcher Brooke Turner was named the Big West Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on March 10. Turner was again outstanding, this time at home during the Long Beach Invitational, throwing two shutouts and allowing no earned runs during the week.
Last week's NFCA National Player of the Week, Turner's encore came in three games at the Long Beach Invitational where the Beach went 3-1. Turner started off the week with her fifth double-digit strikeout game of the season, sitting down 11 Irishman in a 1-0 win over Notre Dame. Her dominance in the circle continued in her fifth consecutive shutout in a 8-0 run rule win over No. 8 Northwestern. Finally to close out the week, Turner extended her scoreless innings streak to 45 before allowing an unearned run in the eighth inning, losing a tough battle with Anjelica Selden of No. 2 UCLA 1-0.
Turner has now won the Big West weekly award four times out of the five its been issued. The only time she hasn't picked it up this season is when the team took a week off following their six-day trip to Hawai'i.
No. 25 Long Beach State will play five games this weekend, heading down to the San Diego Classic this weekend. The 49ers will start the weekend at San Diego State University, playing Iowa State on March 14.
