FRESNO, Calif. -- - The Long Beach State men's golf battled with two fronts, one on the green and the other was trying to stay healthy and just finish the tournament. The 49ers finished in 18th place at the Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic on Tuesday afternoon minus one player as Aaron Slonim withdrew from competition in the final round due to illness. The 49ers shot a 296 in the final round to finish with a 21-over par 885. San Diego State claimed the team title as the Aztecs finished with an 841.
Issei Suenaga having battled all day on Monday and Tuesday with flu-like symptoms, shot an 8-over 80 in the final round to fall in the standings to finish tied for 20th. Suenaga shot an impressive 67 in the first two rounds on Monday as he finished in first place. Michael Drake (74-71-72) recorded a 217 as he finished tied for 38th. JJ Katnik (71-77-74) finished tied for 66th, followed by Ricky Montanez (76-73-76) tied for 77th. Matt Hoffenberg (69-68-70) of San Diego State and Charlie Holland (70-68-69) of Texas both finished tied for first.
"Tough day," said 49er Head Coach Bob Livingstone.. "Aaron withdrew because of illness and Issei really struggled with his illness and just got too exhausted at the end. I'm proud of the team of how they gutted it out, considering we've all been sick. You chalk it up and move on."
The 49ers are next in action as they travel up to Santa Cruz for the 62nd Western Intercollegiate on Mar. 26-27.
