Box Score

San Diego, Calif. - After a loss in their first game of the season, the 49ers could do no wrong in a blowout win in their second, a 6-0 decision over San Diego. Brooke Turner set a school record in her very first start with 15 strikeouts, and the Beach put up five runs for a late cushion to even their record after one day.

While the offense was impressive, it appeared that freshman Brooke Turner didn't need any help on Saturday. The freshman gave up a double in the first inning, half of two Torero hits on the night, but struck out at least two batters in every inning but the sixth and struck out the side twice.

Turner's 15 strikeouts were two more than the previous Long Beach State record, shared by Meredith Cervenka and Diane Lewis.

While Turner was dominant on the mound, the 49ers were just as impressive at the plate, led by two more newcomers in Jennifer Griffin and Danielle Linke. Griffin was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Linke also added three hits and two RBI.

The 49ers picked up the only run they would need in the top of the first. Brianna Goad and Lacy Tyler both singled to start things off for the Beach, and after Jessica Beaver grounded into a fielder's choice, Griffin singled to center to bring home Tyler for the first run of the game.

Two scattered doubles were the only hits for San Diego, while the 49ers continued to pound out 11 total hits. The 49ers added two more in the sixth, as a Linke triple scored Jennifer Griffin, and then Linke came home on a single from Brooke LeSage. The seventh added more damage, as the Toreros put two LBSU runners on with a walk and an error, and both scored after an RBI double from Griffin was followed by one-run singles from Ashley Weber and Linke.

Long Beach State (1-1) continues play tomorrow on their last day in the San Diego tournament. The 49ers play Illinois-Chicago at 10 a.m. before facing No. 17 Stanford for the second time in the young season.
