Seattle, Wash. - Brent Gray shattered the Dempsey Indoor site record in the 200m on the way to a win on the opening day at the MPSF Championships. Gray was the top scorer for the 49ers, finishing with a time of 20.93 seconds to set the facility's best mark in the event.
"I'm really pleased for Brent with his time in the 200," said head coach Andy Sythe. "It's a mark that really represents our school well, and I'm excited to see what else we can do as a team tomorrow."
Gray also broke his own school record in the 60m sprint, taking off a tenth of a second with a time of 6.80 to qualify for tomorrow's finals.
Robert Jennings also picked up points for the men, who finished the opening day with 15 points, just two points away from fifth place overall with a smaller team. Jennings tossed a 18.82m best in the weight throw to grab a fourth-place finish in the event.
The weight throw was also a good event for the women, where Jennifer Onyeagbako earned points for Long Beach State with a throw of 17.40m.
Getting their first indoor action of the year, Long Beach State's women's distance runners also put up a nice time. The foursome of Missy Barclay, Patrice White, Ejiro Okoro and Sarah Apgar easily took down the Long Beach State distance medley relay record. Previously set at 12:20.14, the Long Beach State entry finished with a time of 12:02.40 to beat the old record by nearly 18 seconds.
Along with Gray's time in the 200m, Kelsey Caesar also was on pace to put up a very fast time. The freshman put up a 21.61 time, a lifetime-best prior to a DQ near the end of the race.
The pair of long jumpers in today's competition also put together good marks, as both Miia Mobley and Phylicia Johnson set season-highs in the event.
Looking towards tomorrow, Ericka Feazell qualified for the finals in the 60m hurdles, a solid event for her where she finished with a time of 8.77 seconds, just a tenth of a second off of her best time this year. Another 49er woman to watch is Sarah Apgar, making her first run in the 3000m during indoor season.
Alex Freitas picked up a relay split on Friday that confirms his chances for a provisional NCAA berth in the 800m run Saturday, and Hudson Wilvers will also be a factor in that event, a strong position for the 49ers. The 49ers will also look for a clean run and a fast time from Kelsey Caesar in the 400m tomorrow.
Action at the MPSF Championships will conclude tomorrow afternoon from Seattle.
