Las Vegas, Nev. - Long Beach State scored early and often to pick up their second straight win over the Rainbow Wahine 4-0 in the opening game of the Eller Media Stadium Classic. Jessica Beaver hit a two-run single in the second to break open a 1-0 game.
The 49ers also benefitted from another outstanding performance from freshman pitcher Brooke Turner. Turner was again dominant on the mound, striking out 10 for her second straight double-figure strikeout total and allowed only three hits in the shutout.
Taking a 1-0 win in their last game against Hawai'i, the 49ers got their first run early against the Rainbow Wahine in their first neutral site game of the season. Whitney Radcliff earned a walk to start the rally, and after an error moved the senior to third, Jennifer Griffin hit the first of her two RBI, lofting a sacrifice fly to left scoring Radcliff.
Continuing their success against Hawai'i starter Kate Robinson, Danielle Linke led off the second inning with a double, and after being pushed over by Ashley Levine, a walk and a groundout put two runners in scoring position for the 49ers. Beaver then came up with another clutch hit, a two-out single to left scoring both Linke and Brianna Goad.
Long Beach State added one more run in the third inning, as Lacy Tyler walked to start the inning, and then Jennifer Griffin doubled to left-center, brining Tyler all the way around from first for a 4-0 lead. Switching pitchers at that point, Hawai'i was able to shut down the 49er offense with Jessica Morton, but Turner continued to be in complete control as Long Beach State (9-6) grabbed their third consecutive win over a ranked opponent.
The 49ers continue tournament play this afternoon in Las Vegas against Cal.
