TEMPE, AZ - For the second time this month, the 49ers opened up play against a top-40 opponent with the doubles point, only to be swept in singles play. At No. 19-ranked Arizona State (6-0) it happened on Saturday, as the Sun Devils rebounded to defeat the No. 38-ranked 49ers (3-4) 6-1. LBSU had previously lost to No. 33 LSU the same way.
The No. 1 doubles team of Stephanie Bengson and Hannah Grady defeated Jessica Leitch and Wendy Pilecka soundly, 8-2, while the rubber match went to the No. 3 team of Lisa Armstrong and Lisa Sutton, who won over Lauren Megale and Laila Abdala 9-7. For Bengson/Grady it was their 10th win of the year.
From there it was all ASU as No. 93-ranked Kelcy McKenna led all six singles matches in straight sets, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hannah Grady at the No. 1 position.
The 49ers, who were partially rained out yesterday in Tucson, will travel back to the University of Arizona to take on the Wildcats starting at 7:30 a.m. Pacific. LBSU was leading in four of six singles matches prior to the rain delay and the match will continue where it left off.
