ABOUT DEL WALKER: Del Walker was the 49er men's golf coach for 11 years (1983-1994) ... was instrumental in saving the program from being dropped in the early 1990's, and was inducted into the 49er Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000, with his wife Marty ... Walker was a member of the UCLA golf team (1934-36) and he lost only one match during that span and won the Southern California Collegiate Championship ... he has been a full member of Virginia Country Club since 1940 and is a seven-time Club Champion there.
LAST YEAR AT DEL WALKER: LBSU finished in 14th place at last year's Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic at the Virginia Country Club ... the 49ers recorded a score of 883 (293-289-301) ... Saint Mary's (284-285-287) and Arkansas (282-287-287) were co-champions last year as both teams finished with a score of 856 ... on the individual side for the 49ers, Kris Assawapimonporn and Ryan Wood finished tied for 36th place and current 49er sophomore Michael Drake shot an eight-over 221 (78-72-71) ... Aaron Conrad of San Jose State won the individual title as he shot a nine-under 212.
LIVINGSTONE ON DEL WALKER: "Last year was disappointing, as we had two key players (Brett Lederer and Jeremy Keller) out with injuries, and that really effected us," said 49er Head Coach Bob Livingstone. "The guys are very excited about this year's event. All of the younger guys have had the chacne to get into some tournaments this fall, so everyone has college experience, and they know Virginia pretty well. The field is very good, with Houston and Santa Barbara having already won tournaments this year."
LBSU FINISHES 8TH IN SIMI VALLEY: The 49ers finished in eighth place at the Bill Cullum Invitational in Simi Valley, Calif. ... LBSU shot a 298 in Tuesday's third and final round to finish with a 901. "We played better in the final round," said 49er Head Coach Bob Livingstone. "Everyone improved, which is a good thing. We also passed a few teams, so that will help our confidence and give us a little momentum heading into the Del Walker. We are really looking forward to the Del Walker Invitational. All of our new players have now gotten a few tournaments under their belts, and gained some valuable experience." ... on the individual side, Eric Pitcaithley shot a one-over 73 on Tuesday and finished tied for 16th place with a seven-over 223 (72-78-73). Aaron Slonim tied for 25th with a 225 (71-78-76) and Michael Drake tied for 30th place with a 226 (75-78-73).
ABOUT THE HEAD COACH: Bob Livingstone, a 1988 graduate of Long Beach State with a Bachelors Degree in Finance, is entering his 14th year as the Head Coach of the 49er men's golf program ... after graduating, Livingstone was hired as the Executive Director of the Southern California PGA's Junior Golf Association ... he served in that capacity for six years and upon his departure for Long Beach State his commitment and service were recognized when he received the Bill Bryant Award for "Outstanding and Distinguished Service to Junior Golf" ... in 2000, he was named Big West Coach of the Year after his team qualified for the NCAA playoffs for the first time in 18 years, and the 2004 team won its first Big West Conference Championship in over 30 years.
NEXT UP FOR THE BEACH: The 49ers will next be in action as they open up the Spring season at the Ping Intercollegiate in Sabino Spring, Ariz. on Jan. 29-30, 2008.
