LONG BEACH - Junior Jennifer Griffin and freshman Brooke Turner were named the Big West Player and Pitcher of the Week after the 49ers competed at the Paradise Classic in Honolulu this past weekend. The 49ers went 4-3 on the week, including toppling No. 15 Hawai'i in the tournament's final game.
Playing seven games this week in one of the busiest weeks on the schedule, the 49ers leaned heavily on junior transfer Jennifer Griffin. Coming from Tennessee, the infielder started all seven games at third base, making just one error while hitting .429 with five doubles on the week. She had three hits for the second time this year against Kentucky, had Central Florida pitch around her, with two intentional walks and one additional walk in the first game on the weekend, and was two-for-two with two doubles and a walk in the final game with the Knights.
Turner was a perfect 3-0 in the circle in Hawai'i, defeating Kentucky in her first game of the week, before striking out 12 against Central Florida, tied for the fourth-most in school history and just three off of her own record set against San Diego earlier this year. However, Turner saved her most impressive start for last, striking out nine and allowing just two hits in a 1-0 shutout victory over the No. 15 Rainbow Wahine. On the week, Turner gave up just three earned runs and fanned 24 batters overall.
Turner as now won the award two straight times, after taking the first Pitcher of the Week award last week.
Long Beach State has the week off in preparation for their home opener next week. The Beach will open their home schedule on Tuesday, February 26 against St. John's in a double-header at 1 p.m. Then the team will play No. 11 Florida at 2 p.m. on Feb. 27. All three games will be held at the 49er Softball Complex.
