HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Jennifer Griffin had three hits and scored two runs as the 49ers cruised to a run-rule victory over Kentucky 10-2 in six innings. Brooke Turner went the distance for the 49ers, picking up her second win while striking out three.
Kentucky got on the board first with a two-run second inning. Earning two walks against Turner, the Wildcats took a 2-0 lead after a double from Audrey Meyer scored both runners.
Long Beach State immediately came back in the bottom half of the inning. Jennifer Griffin led off the inning with a single, and after an error, a Jonae Perez walk loaded the bases for the 49ers. However, a second error from Kentucky opened the floodgates, and the Long Beach State would put across four unearned runs in the inning.
More offense for the 49ers developed in the fifth, starting with a leadoff single from Lacy Tyler. Griffin continued the inning with a double, and two straight walks put the first earned run across for the Beach while keeping the bases loaded. The 49ers scored two more runs with small ball on a grounder and a wild pitch, and then got the big hit from Jessica Beaver, who doubled to left-center, scoring two more runs and increasing the Long Beach State lead to 9-2.
Following a 27-minute rain delay, the 49ers pushed another run across in the sixth to force a run-rule finish over the Wildcats.
The 49ers will play a second game later this evening, closing out the round-robin portion of the tournament with a game against No. 15 Hawai'i.
