FIRST TEE: Long Beach State travels up to the northwest for the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Sammamish, Wash. The three-day tournament begins on Monday, Oct. 6, with final round play concluding on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the Sahalee Country Club. First round play is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start, second round beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday and final round starting at 8 a.m. Brenda Chhuor, Kay Hoey, Lee Lopez, Lindsey McAtee and Reina Rogers will represent the 49ers as they go up against 12 other teams (BYU, California, Eastern Washington, Idaho, New Mexico State, Oregon, Oregon State, San Francisco, Stanford, New Mexico, Washington and Washington State).
LAST YEAR IN SAMMAMISH: The 49ers shot a 949 (328-306-315) as they finished in 15th place at last year's Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational. Junior Brenda Chhuor led The Beach as she tied for 46th with a 235 (81-75-79), followed by Katy Barrett with a 237 (80-81-76), tied for 53rd. Sophomores Lindsey McAtee and Erin Cylke posted scores of 244 and 250 respectively as McAtee shot a 244 (92-73-79) and Cylke fired a 250 (85-83-82).
HOEY WINS HEATHER FARR INVITATIONAL: Senior All-American Kay Hoey claimed the individual medalist at the University of Colorado Heather Farr Memorial Invitational. Hoey fired a 7-under 65 in the opening round and posted score of 71 in the last two rounds for a total of 207. Her opening round of 65 tied her personal best as she shot the same low score at the 2007 Peg Barnard Collegiate in Palo Alto. This was Hoey's seventh tournament win in her stellar career as a 49er.
BEACH FINISHES 5TH IN COLORADO: With Hoey claiming the individual title at the Heather Farr Memorial Invitational, as a team, the 49ers finished in 5th place with a 873 (289-292-292). Freshman Lee Lopez had another impressive outing as she finished tied for third with a 213 (69-70-74). This was Lopez's second consecutive Top 10 finish. Reina Rogers came back on the last day to improve with an even 72 to move up from 65th to tie for 49th. Rogers finished with an 11-over 227. Brenda Chhuor also moved up in the standings by six spots as she shot a 3-over 75 to finish tied for 59th. Erin Cylke continued with her strong performance from the second round to move up from 87th to tie for 73rd. Cylke recorded a 3-over 75 on the last day to finish 17-over 233.
HOEY NAMED BIG WEST GOLFER OF THE MONTH: Long Beach State All-American senior Kay Hoey was named Golfer of the Month by the Big West Conference for September. This was the first monthly award handed out by the Big West for men's and women's golf this season. This marked the ninth time that Hoey has been named Big West Golf of the Month as she has won the honor three times as a junior and sophomore and twice as a freshman.
BEACH MAKES AN IMPRESSIVE START TO SEASON: Long Beach State began the 2008-09 campaign at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Ft. Collins, Colo. The 49ers shot a three-round total of 877 (287-293-297) to finish in 6th place. True Freshman Lee Lopez made her collegiate debut by being on top of the leader board after the opening round by shooting a one-under 71. Lopez finished the tournament tied for 3rd place with a 6-under 210. After redshirting last year, senior All-American Kay Hoey shot a 4-under 140 for the first two rounds to finish tied for 7th. Hoey completed the final round with a 2-over 74 to finish tied for 11th.
HOEY RETURNS FOR SENIOR YEAR: All-American Kay Hoey returns to the 49ers as its lone senior after redshirting last year. As a junior in 2006-07, she was selected second team All-America by the National Golf Coaches Association. She was named Big West Golfer of the Year and first team All-Big West as she claimed the individual medalist at the Big West Conference Championship. Hoey tied for 46th place at the NCAA Championships with a 305 (79-77-75-74) and qualified for the NCAA Finals by tying for 10th place at the NCAA West Regionals with a 220 (77-73-70). She had eight Top 10 finishes in her 11 tournaments and captured three individual titles.
VINAL JOINS THE BEACH AS 49ERS' ASSISTANT COACH: Zack Vinal joins The Beach as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's golf teams for the 2008-09 season. Vinal enjoyed a four-year career at Binghamton University (Vestal, N.Y.), where he was a two-time Division-I PING All-Region selection and was selected as a Cleveland Golf All-American Scholar for his accomplishments during his senior year. He holds the career scoring average in the schools Division-I era as well as the single season scoring record at Binghamton University. In addition, he had 22 top-10 tournament finishes during his career. Zack was recognized by the state of New York as the 2008 SUNY Chancellor's Award. The annual award is given to one athlete from the entire New York state university system for outstanding performance in sport and academics.
NEXT UP FOR THE BEACH: The 49ers are next in action as they take part in the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown hosted by UNLV. The three-day tournament begins on Monday, Oct. 27 at the Angel Park Golf Club in Las Vegas.
