Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State continued to play at a high-level on the week, dropping Pacific 25-22, 25-19, 25-22 in three sets on Saturday. Led by Quincy Verdin's 12 kills, the 49ers had a balanced attack guided by Nicole Vargas, who had 33 assists, two aces and three kills of her own.
The match was a measure of retribution of 49ers, who had one of their worst matches of the year in their previous meeting with the Tigers on the road in Pacific on Sept. 26 in a three-set loss. In this meeting, the 49ers put together nine blocks and offset a 34-26 digs deficit with .255 hitting.
Long Beach State took advantage of a number of Tiger miscues starting at the beginning of the match to grab a 14-9 lead. Pacific worked their way back into the set behind two Dancyne Kama aces, pulling within one, and the Tigers would eventually take a 22-21 lead before a Long Beach State timeout. The 49ers recovered with four straight points to take a 25-22 win, ending with a Verdin kill.
Keeping the pressure on in set two, the 49ers lost the opening point and then took nine straight points as Pacific was unable to keep the ball on the floor with five errors in that stretch. With the large cushion, the 49ers coasted to a 25-19 win in the second set, closing out the set with an ace from Nicole Vargas.
The match tightened up in the third set, as Pacific came back from an early deficit to take an 8-6 lead. Long Beach State regained the lead briefly behind a block from Ashley Lee and Brittney Herozg, but Pacific would eventually open up a 17-14 lead. Long Beach State hit Verdin for two big kills to regain the lead at 18-17, and would never trail again in a 25-22 win to close out the match.
The Beach has an extended break in their league schedule, getting a week off before resuming their homestand on Tuesday, November 4. The 49ers host Cal State Fullerton on Election Night beginning at 7 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid.
