Long Beach, Calif. - Recovering from a slow start, Long Beach State hit Brittney Herzog, Quincy Verdin and Caitlin Ledoux down the stretch for a 19-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-16 win Tuesday night. Setting 36 assists to the team, Nicole Vargas also made a team-leading 20 digs for The Beach.
The 49ers struggled out of the gate with Cal State Fullerton, showing signs of the long layoff between matches. Cal State Fullerton opened up a 3-0 lead to start the match, and held a lead throughout after opening a 14-9 lead. Brittany Moore, the Titans' main attacker had 10 kills in the set while the 49ers had just 7 as a team.
The 49ers quickly turned things around in the second set. Taking their first lead of the match, the 49ers had a small run in the middle of the set to take a 14-9 lead, sparked by a Herzog kill. From there, the 49ers continued to take advantage of Fullerton miscues on the way to a 20-14 lead. Down the stretch, the 49ers hit Caitlin Ledoux three times and evened the match with a 25-15 win.
Set three featured more from Herzog, who hit .579 in tabulating her 11 kills. The 49ers went to her three straight times in taking a 10-4 lead, which would eventually balloon to 10 points at 19-9. Cal State Fullerton made a furious comeback, but the 49ers never gave up the lead on the way to a 25-22 win.
Keeping their momentum from their late run in the third set, Cal State Fullerton held things close in the fourth, battling with the 49ers to a 13-13 tie. Long Beach State would score seven of the next eight points, as Herzog would add two kills and two blocks to help spark the run. The 49ers finally closed out the match with a Caitlin Ledoux kill, her 13th which was the most on the team.
Long Beach State finishes the week with a key road trip. First, the 49ers head to UC Santa Barbara to play the Gauchos Friday at 7 p.m., and will then put their first-place standing on the line with second-place Cal Poly on Saturday.
