Long Beach - Long Beach State senior All-American Kay Hoey was named Golfer of the Month by the Big West Conference today. This was the first monthly award handed out by the Big West for men's and women's golf this season. This marked the ninth time that Hoey has been named Big West Golf of the Month as she has won the honor three times as a junior and sophomore and twice as a freshman.
"It's a really good feeling to be honored," said Hoey. "It doesn't even feel like that I took a year off. I'm happy to be back with the team and having lots of fun at the same time. I feel pumped up for our team and our next tournament."
Just this past weekend, Hoey won the University of Coloardo Heather Farr Memorial Invitational as she shot a three-round total of 207 (65-71-71). Her opening round of 65 tied her personal best as she recorded the same score in 2007 at the Peg Barnard Collegiate in Palo Alto.
Playing in her first tournament this year after redshirting last season, Hoey tied for 11th place at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., as she finished with a 214 (71-69-74).
"I'm happy for Kay as she has played really great golf," said 49er Head Coach Sue Ewart. "It seems like she just resumed playing where she left off a year ago. We're all excited for Kay as we all want her to have a memorable senior year."
