Long Beach, Calif. - Deborah Armstrong won two matches on Friday to advance to the Flight A quarterfinals at the Fullerton Invitational, one of the 49ers to reach the main draw quarterfinals on the day. She was also joined by Julie Luzar and Jessica Weeks in the main draw quarterfinals.
Armstrong started off the day by defeating Erin Oki of UC Riverside 6-3, 6-4, and then continued her run with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 upset of Ana Victoria Lind of UCLA. The 49ers had two other competitors in Flight A for singles. Stephanie Jeanes was defeated by UCLA's Nina Pantic, 6-2, 7-6, and Suzie Matzenauer of Cal Poly dropped Rachel Manasse 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in one of the more exciting matches of the day.
In Flight B, the 49ers also had a lot of success, winning all three matches in singles. Jessica Weeks started with a first-round bye, and then stopped Audry Bulkley of LMU 6-4, 6-1 to advance to Saturday's play. Julie Luzar won two matches, beating Angelique Corpuz of UC Riverside 6-3, 6-1 before taking down Karina Akhmedova of CS Fullerton.
In doubles, the 49ers did not find the same success, as Armstrong and Luzar fell to Davis and Matzenauer of Cal Poly 8-5, and Weeks and Manassee fell in the quarterfinals 8-3 to UCLA's Wetmore and Walters after an opening round win over CS Fullerton's Wiesener and Bullock.
All of today's players will remain in action tomorrow, as the doubles teams play in a back draw, as will Jeanes and Manasse in singles while Armstrong, Weeks and Luzar continue with the quarterfinals in the main singles draw.
