49ers Cruise Past Toreros 6-1

49ers Post 6-1 Win over San Diego to Open Season LONG BEACH— No. 41-ranked Long Beach State (1-0) opened up the 2008 season with a convincing 6-1 win over visiting San Diego (1-1). No. 1 player Hannah Grady made easy work of her opponents, cruising past Helene Lindsrand in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, after posting an 8-1 win along with teammate Stephanie Bengson in doubles play. Bengson, at No. 3 singles also had a light day against her singles opponent, Milou Teeling, winning 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Deborah Armstrong also won in straight sets at the No. 2 position, as did her classmate, Stephanie Jeanes, who rebounded after losing the first set 6-0, winning the final two 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. The 49ers took the first point of the day by sweeping all three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of Bengson and Grady cruised past Milou Teeling and Carla Tamborini 8-1, before the freshmen duo of Armstrong and Lisa Sutton took the point, 8-4, by defeating Tammy Kevey and Monica Wiesener. Beach Tennis continues their schedule with two top-10 matches next week, at No. 8-ranked USC on Wednesday in Los Angeles, before returning home for a match with No. 6-ranked California on Saturday at 2 p.m. The match with Cal was moved back a day due a scheduling conflict with the Golden Bears.
