SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA -- Long Beach State (18-19, 2-3) couldn't overcome Big West Conference leader Cal Poly (29-9, 5-0) on Friday afternoon as they fell 3-1 and 6-1 at Bob Janssen Field.

In game one, Bridgette Pagano (12-7) lasted four innings giving up three earned runs on seven hits and Melissa DeMarco pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the 49ers. Robyn Kontra (8-2) went the distance for the Mustangs allowing one run on four hits. Cal Poly scored three runs on five hits in the fourth inning and that proved to be enough to lift them to the victory. The 49ers threatened in the sixth inning as they loaded the bases with a leadoff single by Brianna Goad followed by back-to-back walks. Jessica Beaver's groundball scored Goad but Brooke LeSage then lined into a double play to end the inning.

In game two, Kelly Cross (5-6) gave up five runs on seven hits and four walks in four innings pitched and DeMarco again tossed two innings of relief giving up one run on two hits. Jessica Beaver and Panita Thanatharn each had two hits for the 49ers. The Mustangs got down to business right away as Krysten Cary smashed a two-run homer in the first inning. The 49ers squeezed one run across in the top of the fourth with a lead-off double by Thanatharn who then scored on an RBI single from Beaver, but Cal Poly responded as they scored two in the bottom half of the inning highlighted by Sarah Iwata's double.

The 49ers will return to action tomorrow at noon for the series finale in San Luis Obispo.
