Trutanic Scores Game Winner in Ninth Inning

STOCKTON, CA -- Pinch runner Stefanie Trutanic scored the game-winning run in the ninth inning to give Long Beach State the 1-0 victory in the series opener at the University of the Pacific, but the Tigers then exploded for 11 runs on 14 hits to take game two by a score of 11-2. The 49ers are now 24-22 overall and 8-6 in the Big West, while the Tigers check in at 33-16, 8-3 Big West.

Bridgette Pagano (16-9) picked up the win in game one going all nine innings allowing no runs on nine hits while striking out two. Whitney Radcliff led the offense with a pair of hits while Pagano and Brooke LeSage each racked up one hit a piece. Chelsea Engle took the loss for the Tigers and Casey Goldsand had three hits for Pacific.

The Tigers had a good chance to score in the bottom of the first inning when Gina Carbonatto led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a walk and a strikeout, Alyce Jorgensen singled to left field and Carbanatto tried to score from second base but was thrown out at the plate by Lacy Tyler to end the inning. Pacific came close to winning the game in the bottom of the seventh, but a diving catch by centerfielder Brianna Goad ended the inning to save a run from scoring and put the game into extra innings. In the top of the ninth inning, Engle issued a leadoff walk to LeSage and Stefanie Trutanic came in to run for the 49ers. Trutanic moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Pagano and advanced to third on a groundball out by Goad. Franciska Morlet then hit a one-hopper to third baseman Alyce Jorgensen who threw wide of first base to score Trutanic.

In game two, Kelly Cross (6-7) took the loss after throwing two thirds of an inning giving up five runs on five hits. Melissa DeMarco came in to finish the game as she allowed six runs on nine hits in four innings of work. Jessica Beaver tallied two hits and Panita Thanatharn had an RBI for the 49ers. Jennifer Curtier hit a three-run homerun breaking the Big West Conference career RBI record with 165, and Alyce Jorgensen had two hits and three RBI to lead the Pacific offense.

The 49ers scored their two runs in the top of the first as Whitney Radcliff led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Levine. Lacy Tyler beat out a groundball to shortstop before Jessica Beaver reached base on a throwing error by Pacific third baseman Kellee Wilson, scoring Radcliff. Tyler, who advanced to third base on the error ended up scoring on a sacrifice fly from Panita Thanatharn.

The Tigers came right back in the bottom half of the inning to score five runs on six hits, highlighted by a two-RBI double from pitcher Alyce Jorgensen. Pacific continued their offensive onslaught in the second inning scoring three runs on four hits. Leading 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, a three-run homer by Curtier ended the game due to the mercy rule.

The rubber game will take place tomorrow at 12 pm at Bill Simoni Field.
