49ers Earn Split on Final Day of Winsberg Memorial Tournament LOS ANGELES, CA -- No. 25 Illinois State (15-5 overall) took advantage of their rematch with Long Beach State as the Redbirds earned the 8-5 win, but the 49ers rebounded to defeat Loyola-Chicago (1-5 overall) 6-0 in the nightcap on the final day of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament at UCLA. The split put LBSU's record at 6-13 overall. Kelly Cross (1-5) went the distance in game one giving up five earned runs on nine hits. Whitney Radcliff and Lacy Tyler both went 3-for-4, while Brianna Goad went 2-for-4 with a double. The 49ers struck first in the third inning after a single by Tyler scored Goad from third base, but the Redbirds responded with a four-run fifth inning as Jessie Buker blasted a three-run homerun. LBSU came back in the bottom of the fifth to tie it up at 4-4 before Illinois State scored four runs in the last two innings. LBSU threatened in the sixth as a single by Jessica Beaver brought home Kourtnee Gervasi, but the 49ers couldn't get much else going as they dropped the 8-5 decision. In game two, Bridgette Pagano (5-4) tossed a two-hit shutout with five strikeouts to lead the 49ers to a 6-0 victory over Loyola Chicago. Jessica Beaver went 2-for-4 with a home-run and a double, while Brianna Goad and Lacy Tyler chipped in two hits apiece. The 49ers pushed one run across in the first inning with Goad scoring on a Rambler error. Beaver came up big for the 49ers in the fourth inning as she slammed a three-run homerun, her fifth of the season. LBSU gave Pagano a couple of insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Beaver and Tyler led the inning off with back to back doubles. A single by Panita Thanatharn scored Beaver and a bases loaded walk to Kourtnee Gervasi brought home Tyler. The 49ers will return home next weekend after starting the season off with four tournaments on the road, as they host the Long Beach Invitational on March 9-11 at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.
