LONG BEACH, CA -- Long Beach State (18-18, 2-2 Big West) couldn't overcome Big West Conference leader Cal Poly (28-9, 4-0 Big West) on Friday afternoon as they fell 3-1 in the series opener.
Bridgette Pagano (12-7) lasted four innings giving up three earned runs on seven hits and Melissa DeMarco pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the 49ers. Robyn Kontra (8-2) went the distance for the Mustangs allowing one run on four hits. Cal Poly scored three runs on five hits in the fourth inning as that proved to be enough to lift them to the victory. The 49ers threatened in the sixth inning as they loaded the bases with a leadoff single by Brianna Goad followed by back-to-back hit batters. Jessica Beaver's groundball scored Goad but Brooke LeSage then lined into a double play to end the inning.
