Irvine Takes Big West Opener 9-4 IRVINE, CA-- No. 20-ranked Long Beach State (13-10, 0-1 Big West) committed a season-high four errors as No. 24-ranked UC Irvine (19-6-1, 1-0 Big West) ran away from The Beach 9-4 in the Big West opener for both ball clubs. Scott Gorgen (5-1) retired 10 in a row in the middle innings and settled down after LBSU led 2-0 after two innings and tied it in the fourth at 4-4. Gorgen pitched his first complete game of the season, scattering eight hits and just two after the fourth inning. Kip Masuda drove in two and had three hits, while Steve Tinoco added his first three-hit game of his young career. LBSU starter Vance Worley (1-1) pitched into the eighth, giving up a career-high nine runs (five earned) on 13 hits for his first loss of the season. Saturday's game will be at 6 p.m. and Sunday's will be at 1 p.m. |
