LONG BEACH, CA -- In the home opener at the 49er Softball Complex, Long Beach State earned a 5-1 victory over Miami (Ohio). The 49ers improved to 10-14 on the season, while Miami fell to 7-15.

Long Beach State scored five runs on four hits, two errors, and eight walks. Bridgette Pagano (9-4) went the distance for the 49ers allowing one run on four hits, while Kourtnee Gervasi led the offensive attack with a two-run double.

After giving up a leadoff homerun to designated player Leslie Macedo in the first inning, Pagano settled down and held the Redhawks scoreless. The 49ers answered in the bottom of the first inning as Breezy Goad had a leadoff single, stole second and then scored on Panita Thanatharn's single up the middle.

LBSU broke the 1-1 tie in the third inning when Ashley Levine's walk forced Jessica Beaver home, and then Gervasi's double plated Stefanie Trutanic and Brooke LeSage. The 49ers pushed one more across after what assumed to be a bases loaded walk to Whitney Radcliff scored Gervasi. The umpire then called a late strike bringing Radcliff back to the plate, but the damage had already been done for the Redhawks as Gervasi had touched home plate without being tagged.

The 49ers will take the weekend off and return to action on Tuesday, March 20 as they take on Ohio State for a single game at 3 pm at the 49er Softball Complex.
