HONOLULU, HI-- The Long Beach State men's golf team is in 12th place after two rounds of the John Burns Intercollegiate being held at the Leilehua Golf Course in Hawai'i. The 49ers shot a four-under 284 in Wednesday's opening round and followed that up with a 294 on Thursday. UNLV is in first place with a combined 22-under 554. BYU stands in second place at 564.
Individually, 49er freshman Michael Drake (Riverside,CA) is tied for third place with an eight-under 136 (65-71). Drake shot a 71 in Thursday's second round after shooting a 65 on Wednesday. Drake is two shots behind co-leaders Jarred Texter (UNLV) and Frank Wrenn (SMU), who both stand at 10-under 134. The rest of the 49ers had some tough rounds. Brett Lederer and Ryan Wood are both tied for 68th place with a four-over 148. Wood shot a 71 today after Wednesday's 77, while Lederer shot a 76 on Thursday after shooting a 72 on Wednesday. Karl Katnik is tied for 77th place with a 149 (70-79) and Nick Badel is tied for 115th with a 156 (80-76).
"We just couldn't buy a putt today," said 49er Head Coach Bob Livingstone. "Even though we fell a few spots, we're in a position, if we play like we did in the first round, we can get a very good finish. Michael really had it going today. He birdied his last two holes to get back into contention. He's really excited about tomorrow."
