49ers Drop Two in Second Day of Tourney
Beach Rallies but Comes up Short in Both Games

SANTA BARBARA, CA -- Despite a couple of late rallies, Long Beach State (2-6) dropped two games at the Softball by the Beach Invitational in Santa Barbara falling 9-6 to fellow Big West Conference member and tournament host UC Santa Barbara (4-2), before dropping a 7-5 decision to Nevada (2-6).

In the opener, Kelly Cross made her debut as a 49er striking out nine in 5.2 innings pitched. Cross came in to relieve Lacy Tyler (0-4) who was credited with the loss. Jessica Beaver and Panita Thanatharn both went 2-for-4, while Kourtnee Gervasi had three RBI.

Melinda Matsumoto (2-0) earned her second victory of the season for UCSB as Jennifer Davis came in to record the save. Tisha Duran led the Gauchos offense as she went 3-for-4 with four RBI.

The Gauchos came out on fire as they scored six runs in the first inning, while the 49ers offense was quiet until a double by Thanatharn scored Beaver in the fourth inning. LBSU rallied in the fifth inning as they pushed five runs across, but it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit as they fell 9-6.

In the afternoon game, the 49ers went in to the seventh inning trailing 7-2. LBSU then rallied in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs before a line drive out ended the game. Bridgette Pagano (2-2) went the distance in the loss, while Brianna Goad jumpstarted the offense as she went 2-for-4 with a solo HR and two RBI.

The 49ers are back in action tomorrow as they take on Northern Colorado at 11:30 am.
