MALIBU, Calif. -- After a desperation three-pointer by Maurice Clady sent the game into overtime, but the 49ers couldn't stop the Pepperdine offensive attack as the Waves came away with a 92-81 overtime win over Long Beach State on Wednesday evening at Firestone Fieldhouse. The win was the first of the season for Pepperdine (1-4), while Long Beach fell to 1-3 on the young season.
49er freshman Greg Plater had a career-high 21 points and six assists as the 49ers had five players hit double digits in scoring, but also had four players foul out of the contest. Donovan Morris and Artis Gant both added 13 points, Brian Freeman had 12 and Darnell Porter 10. Long Beach State shot .476 (30-63) from the field for the contest, but struggled at the free throw line hitting just 15-of-26 charity tosses (.577).
Tyrone Shelley led the Pepperdine attack with 25 points and Malcolm Thomas had 20 points and 16 rebounds. The Waves forced 23 49er turnovers while shooting .420 (29-69) from the field and 10-32 (.313) from three-point range. Pepperdine, which committed 22 turnovers of its own, out-rebounded the 49ers 44-to-41.
"We did a good job until we got fatigued", said 49er Head Coach Dan Monson. "I thought we played hard and smart. We just were not tough enough, both mentally and physically. I thought the kids did a good job of trying to execute, you just can't do that for parts of the game on the road."
In overtime, the Waves scored the first five points of the period and ended up out-scoring Long Beach 17-6. Shelley had nine of his 25 points in overtime as Pepperdine was 7-of-8 at the free throw line.
The 49ers were able to slow down the Wave offense in the first half, leading 36-31 at the half. Plater had 12 first half points, hitting four-of-five three's as the 49ers shot .500 (14-28) from the field and limited the Waves to a .367 (11-30) field goal percentage. Long Beach reached its largest lead of the game at 25-15 after a Gant lay-up at 10:07. Pepperdine never led in the half, but the 49ers had 12 turnovers and the Waves cut the deficit to five at the half.
Pepperdine didn't take its first lead of the contest until the 8:31 mark after Thomas converted a three-point play to give Pepperdine a 57-56 lead. Long Beach fought back to take a 60-57 lead on a Plater bucket, but Shelley responded with a three-point play to tie the contest at 60-60 and the game see-sawed back and forth from there.
Morris hit two free throws with 12 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 73-72. After a quick foul, Shelley hit one of two to expand the lead to 74-72. Donovan then drove down the lane and just missed a lay-up with 2.8 seconds left which would have tied the game. The 49ers fouled and Thomas responded by hitting one-of-two charity tosses to give the Waves a 75-72 lead. The inbounds pass came in to Clady, who dribbled up the right side and let go a rainbow shot just past half court which rattled into the bucket for the game-tying three to end regulation.
The 49ers will next be in action on Monday, November 26 when they play at the University of Washington at 7:30 pm at the Bank of America Arena in Seattle, Washington.
