SEATTLE, Wash. -- Justin Dentmon scored 15 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lead the University of Washington to an 84-69 win over visiting Long Beach State on Monday evening at the Bank of America Arena. The Huskies snapped a short two-game losing skid to improve to 4-2 on the season. The 49ers, 1-4 on the year, were led by Artis Gant's career-high 15 points while Donovan Morris added 14.
Long Beach came out strong in the second half and tied the contest at 61-61 with 9:34 remaining on a Morris field goal. But from there the 49ers went cold. Long Beach scored just two points over the next seven-plus minutes and fell behind 77-65. The 49ers opened the second half with a 12-5 run to pull to within 46-45 with 15:56 remaining. After a short 10-3 UW spurt, the Huskies led 56-48 after Dentmon's second three of the half. But, the 49ers bounced back with a 13-5 run over the next three minutes to tie the contest at 61-61. Morris and Darnell Porter each tallied five points in that run.
"It's still a process for us right now," said 49er Head Coach Dan Monson. "This game will help us. We were down early in the game and for the first time this year we didn't break and separate. I credit Washington though, they did a good job tonight. I thought we did a good job of taking Brockman out of the game and make someone else beat us, and that's where Dentmon stepped up. This was a good overall team effort."
Morris scored 12 of his 14 in the second half and Porter added a career-high 12 points, adding seven rebounds. Brian Freeman hit double digits as well with 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists while Cornel Williams had a career-best 10 points. Long Beach shot .577 (15-26) from the field in the second half and out-rebounded the Huskies 34-to-32. The 49ers also shot .545 (6-11) from three-point range for the game with Gant and Porter both connecting on two treys.
Washington also had five players score in double digits as Brockman and Joel Smith both had 13 points and Matt Bryan-Amaning added 11. The Huskies shot .582 (32-55) from the field for the contest, including an impressive .727 (16-22) in the second half. Washington hurt itself at the free throw line connecting on just nine-of 26 attempt (.346).
Washington used some hot-shooting to begin the contest grabbing a quick 7-0 lead. Long Beach came back to tie the game at 9-9 after a Gant steal and lay-up at 15:16, but the Huskies went on a 15-3 run over the next 4:02 to take a 24-12 lead with 11:14 remaining. Washington hit five of its first eight three-pointers, and ended the half shooting 5-13 (.385) from long-range. The biggest lead for the Huskies was 16 points (32-16) at 8:33. The 49ers fought back to pull within 41-33 at the half, limiting the Huskies to just two points over the final four minutes of the stanza. Gant led the way for The Beach offensively with nine first half points, while Freeman added eight. Long Beach shot .364 (12-33) from the field in the half, compared to .485 (16-33) for the Huskies and were even with Washington on the boards with each squad grabbing 21 rebounds.
The 49ers continue on the road this weekend when head to the midwest as they take on Saint Louis University on Saturday at 11 am Pacific Time.
