Beach Remains Two Games Back in the Standings

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA-- Using the same lineup for the second-straight game, Long Beach State (25-20-1, 9-2-1 Big West) pounced on host Cal Poly (25-22, 8-7 Big West) to win the series with a 13-4 win on Sunday afternoon.

After losing the opener on Friday, 8-2, LBSU outscored the Mustangs 20-4 over the next two games, pounding out 26 hits. Brandon Godfrey drove in six runs over the final two games of the series, including two this afternoon.

LBSU has now won nine of its last 11 and remained two games back in the Big West standings following CS Fullerton's come-from-behind, 7-5 victory at UC Santa Barbara.

Shane Peterson drove in a career-best five runs, going 3-for-5 while Danny Espinosa added three hits as part of a 15-hit attack. Tom Wolf, Evan Longoria and Scott Bradley added two hits a piece.

Bradley and Peterson both hit three-run home runs in the game, Bradley's shot coming in the second to make it 7-0, while Peterson's blast to right-center made it 10-0.

Donnie Hume (3-3) evened his record with his second-straight win as a starter, going five and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on eight hits. He tired in the sixth inning, giving up both of his runs and three of his hits in the inning, before Vance Worley and Brett Andrade retired the next seven Mustangs over the middle innings.

Cal Poly starter Casey Fien (4-2), who pitched two shutout innings on Friday, was roughed up for 10 runs on eight hits over four innings.

The Dirtbags play five times next week, hosting Loyola Marymount (Tuesday) and UC Santa Barbara (next weekend) and traveling to CS Northridge to complete a suspended game, on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
