Freshman Solid in Relief as The Beach Begin Long Week with Win

LONG BEACH, CA-- With four games looming on the horizon this week, Vance Worley (3-7) came on in the fourth and finished the game, giving Long Beach State (26-20-1) a season sweep of Loyola Marymount (22-27) with a 5-3 win.

Brandon Godfrey drove in two runs tonight and eight over his last three games, going 3-for-5, while Robert Perry added three hits of his own, as the Dirtbags won its third straight.

Worley at one point retired eight in a row through the middle innings, before giving up a run in the eighth as the Lions closed to within 5-3. Worley then got a strikeout and covered first on a play to second to end the threat, going five and two-third innings, giving up one run on five hits.

The Beach broke open the game in the first, coming back from a run down, by scoring four times to lead 4-1. An RBI single by Longoria tied it, before a two-run triple by Godfrey made it 3-1. A sacrifice fly by Shane Peterson made it 4-1.

Danny Espinosa then squirted one over the head of a drawn-in infield after a leadoff triple by Perry to make it 5-2 in the seventh.

Andy Beal lasted just the first two innings, giving up four runs on five hits, while Andre Lamontagne tied his career-high, with a pre-determined three and one-third innings, giving up two runs on four hits, leaving with a 4-1 lead.

The Beach continue its long week with the continuation of its suspended game at CS Northridge on Wednesday at 3 p.m., before returning home for a three-game series with UC Santa Barbara starting on Friday.
