Turner, Gervasi Lead LBSU to Win LOS ANGELES, CA -- Junior pitcher Michelle Turner established the outright single-season wins record and Kourtnee Gervasi scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning, as the Long Beach State softball team defeated San Diego State, 1-0, in the opening game of the NCAA Los Angeles Regional on Friday afternoon from UCLA's Easton Stadium. Turner won her school-record 26th game in the circle and threw her eighth shutout of the season after allowing just two hits with four strikeouts. In fact Turner had a no-hitter thru 5 1/3 innings. Bree Boyer's single in the sixth inning broke up her no-hit bid. Turner broke Annette Gonzales' 18-year school record of 25 wins set in 1988. Turner also notched her 30th complete game, a single-season record as well. Gervasi, whose mother passed away Tuesday night, singled to left field with one out, and was advanced to second base on a Breezy Goad sacrifice bunt. Tiffanie Wedell's infield single was aided by an error by SDSU (32-14) short stop, Chrissie Markham, that allowed Gervasi to score from second base. Turner shut down the Aztecs the rest of the way, allowing just two singles and no walks. Long Beach State (31-20) takes on the winner of UCLA/Missouri State Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
