49ers Split with Gauchos on Friday Box Score (Gm 1) LBSU stands at 29-20, 12-5 Big West, while UCSB is 24-19, 8-9 Big West. Michelle Turner continued to climb the 49er record books in game one when she joined Kristi Fox for most wins in a season (24) after allowing two runs on five hits and six strikeouts. Fox had 24 wins in 2000. Turner can equal the school record of 25 wins set by Annette Gonzales in 1988 when she starts on Saturday. Turner did tie Gonzales for most complete games in a single season with 28. Turner can tie Fox's single season record of 29 complete games on Saturday as well. Long Beach State unlocked a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Lacy Tyler's double to right field plated both Jonae Perez and Tiffanie Wedell to give LBSU a 2-0 lead. The 49ers added a pair of key runs in the top of the seventh inning when a single by Breezy Goad, coupled with a fielding error by UCSB second baseman, Christine Ramos, allowed for Melanie McCauley and Kourtnee Gervasi to score from second and third base respectively. Those two runs were critical because the Gauchos made a late surge in the bottom of the seventh inning when Kendra Singley hit a one out, two-run home run over the left field fence to cut the deficit to 4-2. However Turner got Tiffany Wright to strikeout and Danielle Meyers to ground out to Wedell to end the game. Game two saw the Gauchos jump on the 49ers early for two runs, courtesy of Singley's second two-run home run in the first inning. Long Beach State trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning when Goad's infield single scored Brooke LeSage from third base. UCSB responded in the bottom half of the inning for three runs, including the key two-run home run from Jennifer Davis to give the Gauchos a 5-1 lead. Tyler suffered her first loss of the season (3-1) after allowing eight runs on 11 hits. The 49ers did leave 12 runners on base. Long Beach State concludes its regular season tomorrow at noon vs. the Gauchos. |
