April 7, 2006 PDF FILE OF THE RELEASE LONG BEACH, CA -- Continuing their best season in school history, the Long Beach State Women's Golf team will be in Palo Alto this Saturday and Sunday for the Peg Barnard Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course. The 14-team field will play 18 holes each day on the 6,168 yard, par 72 course hosted by Stanford University.
Teams participating this weekend are No. 16 California, No. 18 Ohio State, No. 20 Stanford, Hawai'i, Fresno State, Denver, UC Irvine, San Francisco, Oregon State, Portland State, San Jose State, Washington State and Santa Clara. Last year, the University of Washington came away with the title shooting a two-round score of 587 and Washington State's Kim Welch (140) won the individual title for the second year in a row.
"They've had so much rain that they haven't been able to mow anything, it should be interesting," said Long Beach State Head Coach Sue Ewart. "Obviously the team wants to play well and have a little revenge for last week. They should do fine and then hopefully enjoy a week off."
In the lastest Golfweek poll, the 49ers are ranked No. 23 and in Golfstat, The Beach are ranked No. 26. On the individual side, sophomore All-American Kay Hoey ranks 10th nationally in Par 4 scoring with a score of 4.10 and ranks 38th in the latest Golfstat Cup standings.
In its last outing, The Beach finished in 12th place at the PING/Arizona State Invitational in Tempe, AZ. with a score of 924 (311-303-310). No. 2-ranked UCLA won the tournament with a one-over 865 (282-289-288). No. 3-ranked Arizona State finished in second with an 866 (283-298-285) and No. 12-ranked Texas A&M came in third with an 878 (294-293-291). The PING/ASU Invitational was one of the toughest tournaments in the nation as all 16 teams were ranked in the top 59 teams in the nation. There were four Top 10 teams in the tournament.
"All in all, I think we did fine. I'm sure the girls were not thrilled with their finish, but they fought hard on a course that is pretty demanding," said Ewart. "I told them that the majority of teams have played this tournament for many, many years and their experience showed. So for our first outing I think we did well."
In individual competition, Hoey (76-75-80) tied for 45th place along with fellow teammate junior Beth Holterman (80-77-74) as both players shot a 231. Freshman Josefine Lindbergh and sophomore Katy Barrett both tied for 56th place with 234's. Adriana Zwank from the University of Arizona won the individual title with a six-under 210 (69-73-68).
The 49ers finish the 2005-06 regular season at the Peg Barnard Invitational this weekend before the Big West Conference Championship in Mission Viejo on April 24-25.
"I really want them fresh for the Big West Conference Championship," said Ewart. "Then we'll prepare for post-season play." |
