49ers Earn Sweep vs. Pacific Wedell and McCauley Go out with a Win
April 30, 2006 Box Score LONG BEACH, CA The Long Beach State softball team held off a late rally from Pacific and earned the series sweep with a 7-4 win on Sunday afternoon from the 49er Softball Complex.
It was the last home game for seniors Tiffanie Wedell and Melanie McCauley. Wedell finished the afternoon 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while McCauley went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
The 49ers improved to 26-18, 11-4 Big West, while Pacific fell to 24-21, 5-7 Big West. Long Beach State has won six of its last seven games since April 19.
Junior Michelle Turner continued to climb the record books after she earned her 22nd win in the circle (7.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K). Kristi Fox won 22 games in 1998, fifth most in a single season. Annette Gonzales owns the 49er single-season wins total of 25 set in 1988.
Jonae Perez went 4-for-4 with three RBI.
After Pacific struck first with a run in the first inning, the 49ers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Jonae Perez's two RBI single to score Wedell and Breezy Goad was the difference.
The 49ers added another two runs in the bottom of the second inning after Kourtnee Gervasi scored on a wild pitch, followed by another RBI single from Perez to plate Wedell to put LBSU up 4-1.
The Tigers narrowed the gap to 4-2 in the third inning when Brittany Hyams scored off a Jennifer Curtier RBI single.
Long Beach State pushed its lead back to three runs (5-2) after Gervasi connected for an RBI double down the right field line to score McCauley, who reached on a fielder¹s choice.
LBSU opened the game up in the fifth inning with two more runs, with the key hit coming from Wedell as her single plated both Gervasi and pinch runner Franciska Morlet.
Pacific did manage to make things interesting in the seventh inning with two runs, before Turner got Curtier to ground out to Perez to end the game.
The 49ers take to the road for a three-game series vs. UC Davis in a non-conference affair, May 6-7.
